Business education has been offered in our country for so many years. However, students who graduate, unfortunately feel hopeless when they apply for a job in theory until that day. Contrarily, we are lucky academicians who are able to combine theory and practice in the education of the future staff who will be the managers of our countires’ world-wide companies.
New Cooperation with Koçtaş for Retail Management Option Program
Beginning from the academic year of 2010-2011, students who have been successful in all courses taken until the end of 4th term can apply to the program which is supported by the opportunities of internship and employment in Koçtaş. In addition to the basic Business Administration courses, the program will provide students with courses which are adapted according to the requirements of Koçtaş and the retailing sector. Students who complete this program will be able to own a Retail Management Certificate along with their diplomas. In addition, they will have the opportunity to be employed in the position of “Store Management Trainee” in Koçtaş. Applications to the program will be accepted until September 2010.
According to the agreement between Koçtaş, the leading retailer of our country, and Izmir University of Economics, Koçtaş Retail Management Option Program has been developed under the Department of Business Administration. The program provides students with specialization in retail management as well as the opportunity to be employed by Koçtaş.
IUE’s Success In Challenge Future Global Student Competition
In the Challenge Future Global Student Competition, which is among the most important university student organizations based on creativity, innovation and developing new idaes for creating a sustainable future, Izmir University of Economics had achieved a great success through passing the semifinals to finals. Above 70 countries, 250 universities, 552 teams and 1644 students participated to the first competition, and only the team composed of Izmir University of Economics and Dokuz Eylül University students achieved to pass to the finals from Turkey. Students who pass from two different process as semi finals and finals are obliged to form a team from 2 to 4 people, choose a subject among the alternatives, and prepare an innovative and creative project proposal. The projects published on the Challenge Future website are voted by the teams and determine the semifinalists. In the finals, the subjects are determined by the competition authorities. The finalist teams are obliged to prepare a video or a Powerpoint presentation on the chosen subject of their teams, and the finalist teams are seperately evaluated by a Professional jury and are again pass through a voting procedure. In the competition which includes social subjects such as the role of youth in the future, communication, transportation, health, team led by Damla Aktan prepared a project proposal and a video on the challenge “how business schools may create a sustainable value in 5 years”. The team led by Damla Aktan, who is a masters student in Business Administration Department of Izmir University of Economics achieved a great success through reaching upto the fourth range, and even if they could not enter among the first nine finalist teams, Izmir University of Economics achieved to enter into the Most Innovative University Hall of Fame.

Business Administration Students Recieved Their Micro Education Certificates
Business Administration fourth grade students have completed the MICRO EDUCATION PROGRAM themed “Government Subsidies” provided by Aegean Union of Exporters.They received certificates of attandance at the ceremony organized in cooperation with EIB.

THE PROUD OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
The success of Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay, who received Fulbright Scholarship for her education made İzmir University of Economics proud. Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay, who has been working as an academic personnel at İzmir University of Economics since its foundation shared this news with her lecturers before her family. İzmir University of Economics Assistant Dean of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay has been accepted to Harvard University with her project on Organizational Justice, which she prepared last year. The successful academician stated that she would work with Prof. Dr. Max Bazerman one of the successful names in Harvard Faculty of Law and said, “Prof. Dr. Max Bazerman has been working on Moral Values and Ethics. He is also Administrative Board Member of Negotiation Program in Harvard Faculty of Law. I will also work in Negotiation Program for 2 weeks besides my own project.? Günay said that she would go to Boston, USA in January to begin her studies in Harvard and when she turned back, she would continue her academic career in İzmir University of Economics. Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay said, “The experience I will gain there will be very beneficial for the education of my own students when I turn back. After I improve myself on the specialty area of Prof. Dr. Bazerman I plan to develop elective courses and similar programs.? BOTH THE PHYSICAL POSSIBILITIES AND THE APPROACHES ARE THE SAME Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay said that the academicians of Harvard also became brands. She said, “In academic life, many of the publications are with American origin. Their editors are from this university. Being in touch with them are very beneficial for our university and students. We will have the chance to show ourselves as a part of that network.? Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay, who wanted to be taken as an example continued her speech by saying, “The new generation is very clever. However, instead of storing the knowledge, they use what is ready. Storing knowledge brings along success.? WHO IS ASST. PROF. GONCA GÜNAY?
Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay stated that she had visited Harvard University before and defined Harvard as “A rich school at all points?. Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay underlined the fact that before anything else Harvard was a brand and said, “In fact, both the physical possibilities and the approaches are the same with our university. We are reading the same books. We are following the same syllabus.”
After graduating from Bilkent University Faculty of Business Administration, Asst. Prof. Gonca Günay completed her master’s education in Koç University and doctorate education in Dokuz Eylül University. She has been working at İzmir University of Economics since its foundation in 2001. Günay, who has been carrying on administrative duties, is a member of Academy of Management. Günay has many works on articles, papers, books and journals, and she received the “Best Paper” award in the 3rd International Strategic Management Conference and received the encouragement award in Mathematics Competition organized by Scientific and Technical Research Authority of Turkey.
PhD CANDIDATES OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT HAVE WON BEST PRACTICAL PAPER AWARD
Our PhD candidates Dicle Yurdakul and Şebnem Penbek, with their professor Prof. Dr. Güldem Cerit (Head of Dokuz Eylül University School of Maritime Business and Management ) have won “Best Practical Paper Award? in The International Conference “European and Mediterranean Conference on Information Systems (EMCIS 2009)? with their paper “Intercultural Communication Competence: A Study about the Intercultural Sensitivity of University Students based on their Education and International Experiences?
TESCO EUROPEAN HUMAN RESOURCE DIRECTOR IAN DICKSON VISITED OUR UNIVERSITY
Tesco European Human Resource Director Ian Dickson met our students from Retail Management program which was constituted under the Department of Business Management with the agreement between Tesco-KIPA and Izmir University of Economics. During the meeting which was held on the 5th of March with the participation of Tesco Kipa Human Resource Coordinator Remzi Kıraç and HR department representatives Mehtap Yanmaz Keleş, Pelin Akseki Eryurtlu, Nil Timur, Gül Pişkin, Eti Gül Sorias, Oğuz Güleç and Adile Kocabıyıkçı, Ian Dickson shared his valuable knowledge on leadership, leadership in TESCO and the characteristics of successful leaders. Students have formed groups and studied the characteristics of a leader that they chose and Mr Dickson have contributed their study with his valuable comments and directions. ACADEMICIAN HARCAR HAS BEEN ELECTED AS THE REPRESENTATIVE OF “UNESCO?
Asst. Prof. Dr. Tijen Ersoy Harcar who participated “The General Assembly of the Association of Interbalkan Women’s cooperation Societies (AIWCS) and of the UNESCO Center for Women and Peace in the Balkan Countries” conference which took place in Bulgaria at 6-9 November 2008 as a guest of IZIKAD, has been elected as the representative of “UNESCO Center for Women& Peace in the Balkan Countries” in Turkey. Dr.Harcar, who captured the audience’s attention with her “Expatriate Women’s Success in a Globally Mobile Economy” presentation, stressed the importance of Turkey’s representation in international arena under the UNESCO with the projects that would improve the Balkan countries’ socio-economic cooperation and development as well as their intercultural
dialogue.

İzmir University of Economics Department of Business Administration lecturer Asst. Prof. Deniz Atik will be a visiting faculty member giving Principles of Marketing and International Business courses to 200 students throughout 2008-2009 academic year in The University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg, Texas on Mexico border with 17000 students.
