273 thousand lira research support for project on waste aggregators
The ‘waste aggregators’, who collect recyclable materials such as paper, glass and metal, and contribute to nature and the economy by recycling of wastes, became the subject of a scientific research. 3 academics working at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) developed a project to show how the presence of waste aggregators affects individual behavior in recycling. The project was accepted by TUBITAK and was entitled to receive 273 thousand TL of support. Within the scope of the project, which will be completed in 16 months, more than a thousand people will be interviewed in Izmir. How the work of waste aggregators is viewed by the society will be evaluated, and ideas will be developed on how to benefit more from these people, and waste separation behavior will be extended at the community level.
Prof. Dr. Şükrü Özen, Faculty Member at IUE Department of Business Administration, and Prof. Dr. Seda Can, Head of IUE Department of Psychology, will also support the project implemented under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metehan Feridun Sorkun, Faculty Member at IUE Department of Business Administration, as researchers. All the findings obtained in the project named ‘The role of waste aggregators in the waste separation behavior of individuals’ will be presented to TUBITAK and published in international scientific journals.
SUPPORT FROM IZMIR
A workshop will also be held in Izmir where results of the project will be evaluated. Sharing the details of the project, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorkun pointed out that waste aggregators play an important role in recycling. Stating that many projects have been carried out to raise awareness around the world for sustainability and environmental projects, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorkun said that they aim to provide scientific support from Izmir to the studies in this field.
THEY ARE UNDERTAKING AN IMPORTANT MISSION
Stating that many factors such as climate change due to global warming, increasing population and decreased natural resources impose individual responsibilities on everyone in recycling, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorkun said, “We may not be aware of it, but waste aggregators play a very important role in recycling. We can say that they have a social duty in this regard. The aim of our project is to show how the presence of waste aggregators influences individual behavior in evaluating waste. For example; do we neglect this issue individually because there are waste aggregators or, on the contrary, do we sort waste for them so that we can help them? How much do we help them in this regard or how much do we care about their work? We will get answers to such questions with this project. I think that the findings to be obtained with this study in Izmir will be very important in terms of showing the attitude towards waste aggregators throughout Turkey.”
IT WILL BE A FIRST
Stating that the scientific research project they will carry out is the first in the world to “take into account the attitude of individuals towards waste aggregators in waste separation behavior”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorkun said, “As a result of this study, we also aim to make more use of waste aggregators and to develop solutions that will facilitate their work in the evaluation of waste.”
